His Holiness Patriarch Kyrill speaks on Russia, Rus and Holy Rus
Many there are who confuse Russian nationalism and the concept of ‘Holy Rus’ (1). On 21 November 2009 His Holiness Patriarch Kyrill gave an interview on the main State TV channel ‘Rossiya’. During the interview he was asked the following question, which we quote in the original and, directly beneath it, in English translation:
Вы Патриарх не только Московский, но и всея Руси. Однако нет такого понятия - «Русь» - на географических картах. Русь - это где? И каковы тенденции сейчас на Вашей Руси?
Я думаю, Русь - это не «где», а, в первую очередь, «что». Русь - это система ценностей, это цивилизационное понятие. Конечно, это цивилизационное понятие, которое имеет свое географическое измерение. Когда мы говорим «Святая Русь», мы имеем в виду совершенно конкретную идею: идею доминанты духовного над материальным, идею доминанты высокого нравственного идеала. Собственно говоря, в этой традиции и был воспитан народ на том огромном евразийском пространстве, которое сегодня географически составляет юрисдикцию Русской Православной Церкви. Русь - это, в конечном итоге, отличение добра от зла в соответствие с этой огромной духовной традицией, это система ценностей. И если, опять-таки, перейти к географии, то, конечно, ядром этой цивилизации, этого огромного мира являются Россия, Украина, Беларусь, если говорить в современных геополитических категориях. Но не только. Потому что Русь, как цивилизационная идея, имела свое распространение и среди других народов, и мы сегодня считаем и Молдову органической частью этого мира, потому что Православная Церковь сформировала, в том числе, и духовный облик молдавского народа. Московский Патриархат, Русская Церковь - это не Церковь Российской Федерации. Уже сегодня количество епископата в нашей Церкви, находящегося за пределами Российской Федерации, чисто арифметически больше числа архиереев, которые несут свое служение в Российской Федерации. Поэтому велика и ответственность за сохранение этого Русского мира, этой Святой Руси как в содержательном отношении, так, конечно, и с точки зрения духовного единства.
You are the Patriarch not only of Moscow, but also of all Rus (1). However, the concept of ‘Rus’ simply does not exist geographically, it is not on the map. Where is ‘Rus’? And what are the current trends in your Rus?
I think that Rus is not primarily about ‘where’, but about ‘what’. Rus is a system of values, an understanding of civilisation. Of course, it is an understanding of civilisation that has a geographical dimension. When we say ‘Holy Rus’, we are thinking of a perfectly concrete concept: the concept of the primacy of the spiritual over the material, the concept of the primacy of a high moral ideal. Strictly speaking, people raised in this tradition live in this immense Eurasian space, which today geographically constitutes the jurisdiction of the Russian Orthodox Church. In the end, Rus is the distinction between good and evil in accordance with this tremendous spiritual tradition, this system of values. And if we can return to geography for a moment, then of course, at the heart of this civilisation, this immense world, stand Russia, the Ukraine and Belarus, if we are to speak in contemporary geopolitical concepts (3). But not only this. Since Rus as a concept of civilisation has spread among other peoples too, we now also consider Moldova to be an organic part of this world, because the Orthodox Church has also formed, among others, the spiritual profile of the people of Moldova. The Patriarchate of Moscow is not the Church of the Russian Federation. Even now the proportion of bishops of our Church outside the borders of the Russian Federation is actually higher than the proportion of those who serve inside the Russian Federation. For this reason the responsibility for preserving this Russian world, this Holy Rus, is great, both in terms of its content and also of course in terms of spiritual unity.

2.It is for this reason that ‘of all Rus’ is generally translated into English as ‘of all the Russias’, into French as ‘de toutes les Russies’ etc.
3. His Holiness could also have mentioned Carpatho-Russia, most of which is at present still considered as the Transcarpathian region of the Ukraine. Clearly, for diplomatic reasons, he did not do so, including it in the concept of the Ukraine or borderlands. As he said, he is speaking in terms of ‘contemporary geopolitical concepts’.
