Given the bankruptcy and ensuing crisis in Spain and several other EU countries, some experts are now predicting the end of the euro in its present form within three months. It is actually becoming clear, even to the deluded who have for four decades refused to recognise reality, that in order to survive the European Union must become what it says it is, a Union into which individual European countries must disappear.
In the case of those nations which have always wished to remain sovereign and have resisted a United States of Europe, into which their identities will be absorbed, decision time is coming. In no country is this more apparent than in the UK. Having kept a certain independence by refusing to abandon its own currency, it will soon face a choice, of losing its identity entirely by economic Anschluss, or else regaining its freedom by ‘confounding their politics’ and ‘frustrating their knavish tricks’.
